Today in this increasingly internet - reliant society, much of what we used to undertake face to face is now relied upon within the Cyber - World of fast and convenient communication. Facebook, Twitter, Myspace etc. have become the means by which many people seek like-minded people for friendship, relationships, counsel, business and even marriage. This is the way things are done these days.

There is a downside however to this wonderful brave and exciting new cyber world. Disreputable, devious and predatory persons trawl these very same internet sites for their own selfish and criminal ends.

2. Theft is another motive. Once a cyber predator knows about you, your possessions and your movements, they then have the supreme opportunity to break and enter your home.

3. Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in the world. Many persons we have assisted have unwittingly provided copies of their passports, drivers licenses, identification photos etc. to cyber criminals. They are clever and always have good reasons and often to build trust, send you theirs. Of course it is rarely their identification and usually the identification of another of their victims. Once they have these details they empty your life savings and then when there is nothing left to take they are sold on the black market or exchanged for child pornography which is then sold at a higher price. You never find out where your identity has gone and the grief it can cause cannot be underestimated.

4. Sex, glorious sex. Yes, this is one of the main motives for cyber predators. They will tell you they are single, married and divorced, separated, their partner doesn’t understand them, they have a great job, loads of money etc. etc. Mostly what they tell you is embellished beyond belief. Much of it is just lies. They rarely take you to their home, often take you to a rented apartment, rarely answer their mobiles, are often interstate on business and rarely spend an evening with you preferring to meet at times when their relationship partner will not hamper their selfish desires.

These are just a few of the ways that internet relationships can prove emotionally and monetarily destructive.
