Emotional predators have three main objectives; sex, identity theft and ultimately greed. They will use everything that is available to them to deceive you and feel absolutely no remorse. Often they are psychopaths devoid of emotion and thus they only care about what they can get from you.

Things you should never do when communicating over the internet unless you have absolute proof of the identity of the person with whom you are communication:

NB: Absolute proof is not an e-mail address, website address, company name, photo, video streaming, passport or license copy. All of these can be and are often fabricated or stolen from other victims. Unless you have actually met this person face to face, attended their home, sighted an original drivers license or passport or met face to face with relations and others who can verify that person’s identify, then you certainly don’t have the degree of proof you need to be certain and to protect yourself.

• Never send your photo or those of your family members - Photos are used for identity theft and used as new identities to defraud others of your hard earned income.

• Never send sexually explicit photos or trust anyone who wants you to become involved in cyber sex. Even if they promise they will never send that vision to third parties. That vision is liable to end up on the black market and you will unwittingly become a porn star.

• Never send positive identification documents like passports or drivers’ license copies even if they have sent theirs. What they will send is likely to be just some other victims’ identification documents.

• Never send your home or work address or those of your friends and relatives.

• Never discuss your movements and particularly when you will be overseas or absent from your home.

• Never discuss your financial circumstances.

• Never provide bank account/ credit card details or passwords/security codes of credit cards.

• A common ploy is to tell you they are wanting to come and visit you or that they want you to come and visit them. They will concoct clever and deceptive reasons to encourage you to send them money. They will tell you that they are awaiting settlement of a house or business transaction and that until they receive this money they won’t be able to get together with you. They will prey on your kindness and vulnerability/ loneliness and work upon your emotions until they get what they want. They will always promise to repay the money.

• They may ask you for bank account details so that they can transfer funds or provide you with a Western Union office to forward them money.

• Some will learn that you are awaiting a property settlement and this will motivate them to become very creative to get access to that money via an investment scheme of similar.

• It is common for some sexual predators who trawl these dating sites to meet you for dinner and do all they can to attract you and get their way with you. Often they will tell you they cannot take you home because of family problems, religious differences, that they have children from the former marriage that they want to protect or that they are involved in Family Law proceedings and don’t want their partner to know that they are in a relationship. Usually these are all because they are married or in a long term relationship.
